Netflix takes over Nelson Mandela Square

It’s no secret that Netflix knows how to make an entrance — and their latest event at Nelson Mandela Square proved exactly that. The streaming giant took over the iconic Johannesburg landmark for the official launch of its upcoming original series, Bad Influencer, and turned the occasion into an unforgettable experience.

Set against a backdrop of glamour, influence, and deception, Bad Influencer promises to be one of Netflix’s most talked-about South African originals yet.

Instead of the usual red carpet premiere or glitzy afterparty, Netflix opted for something fresh and interactive — a live Q&A session with the show’s major stars, including Cindy Mahlangu, Jo-Anne Reyneke, Aubrey Poo, and former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi. The session was hosted by the ever-charismatic Anele Zondo, with questions coming from fellow Netflix actors such as Prince Grootboom and Nathaniel Ramabula from Fatal Seduction.

The cast offered fans a fascinating look behind the scenes — from the creation of high-energy action sequences to hilarious on-set moments and heartfelt reflections on how the series challenges perceptions about the influencer world.

One of the show’s creators, Kudi Maradzika, shed light on the deeper purpose behind Bad Influencer, explaining that the series aims to mirror the current cultural landscape. “Influencers have become a part of popular culture — often at the same level as celebrities, if not higher,” she shared. This theme was perfectly reflected in the event’s guest list, which brought together a vibrant mix of media personalities, actors, and social media stars.

The spotlight, however, inevitably turned to Zozibini Tunzi, who makes her acting debut in the series. The former Miss Universe spoke candidly about her nerves during the audition process, revealing how she pushed herself out of her comfort zone to take on the complex role of Naomi. Her performance has already sparked anticipation, with fans eager to see her transformation from global beauty queen to on-screen talent.

Set against a backdrop of glamour, influence, and deception, Bad Influencer promises to be one of Netflix’s most talked-about South African originals yet. The series officially premieres on 31 October 2025 — and if the spectacular launch is anything to go by, viewers can expect a show that is every bit as bold and compelling as its debut.
