Opening night of Dancing the Death Drill drew a glittering crowd of theatre lovers, arts enthusiasts, dignitaries, and even military personnel—all gathering to witness a retelling of the SS Mendi tragedy.
The production opens with the hauntingly beautiful voice of Sharon Spiegel-Wagner, who shines as Marie, the French spouse of Pitso Motaung. From there, the play peels back layers of history often told from a single perspective. Instead, we experience the tragedy through the eyes of the troops—their dreams, aspirations, and the complex identity struggles that still echo through South Africa today.
Clint Brink delivers a powerful performance as Pitso, a man born to a Motswana mother, Matshidiso (brought to life by the incomparable Thuli Thabethe), and a white refugee, Cornelius. The ensemble of young men embarking on the doomed voyage share their stories through song and dance—moments of celebration and heartbreak. Ontiretse Manyetsa and Thokozani Nzima stand out with commanding stage presence and heartfelt performances.
Narrators Lerato Gwebu, Sibusiso Mkhize, and Kwenzo Ngcobo guide the audience with precision, ensuring we are pulled into every moment of this unforgettable journey. Charles Bouguenon adds gravitas as Captain Portsmouth, rounding out an already stellar cast.
The production’s heartbeat lies in its music. Scored beautifully by the immensely talented Msaki, the soundtrack elevates the story to another level. The inclusion of her song Nal’i Themba from her debut album is a masterstroke, tying the play together with poignancy and hope.
Without giving too much away, this production is one of the finest currently on South African stages. With its emotive storytelling, breathtaking performances, and flawless musicality, it feels destined for multiple Naledi Awards.
