World Cup Final Bound: South African Proteas Women Are World Cup Finalists

Underdogs No More: Proteas Women Shine

The South African Proteas Women have defied the odds and written their names in history books. Regarded as the underdogs heading into Wednesday’s semi-final, they produced a commanding performance to secure a spot in the Cricket World Cup final after a sensational 125-run victory over England.

Wolvaardt’s Masterclass: A Knock to Remember

Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp were the stars of the show. Wolvaardt delivered a batting masterclass, smashing a scintillating 169 off 143 balls, while Kapp backed it up with a devastating bowling spell of 5/20 to seal the win. Chasing a mammoth 320, England quickly found themselves in deep trouble as Kapp tore through their top order.

Kapp Strikes Back: The Bowling Hero

Speaking after the match, Kapp reflected on her performance:

“To be honest, I probably haven’t had the best World Cup personally. So, coming into this game, I knew I was due a big performance. In past semi-finals, I haven’t been at my best or contributed the way I should have, so I’m really happy that I could have an influence in the result. It’s just the love of the sport -that’s why we play. I absolutely love playing for South Africa.”

From Pressure to Triumph: Key Partnerships That Changed the Game

After being asked to bat first, the Proteas put past traumas against England behind them. Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits (45) got the innings off to a flying start with a 116-run opening stand. However, the introduction of Sophie Ecclestone triggered a mini collapse, reducing South Africa from 116-0 to 119-3.

A composed 72-run partnership between Wolvaardt and Kapp (42) steadied the innings before Wolvaardt reached her 10th ODI century. Her elegant 169, laced with 20 fours and four sixes, powered the Proteas to a commanding total. Late cameos from Chloe Tryon (33*) and Nadine de Klerk (11*) pushed South Africa beyond the 300 mark-finishing with their fourth-highest ODI score.

Eyes on the Prize: World Cup Final Awaits

The victory sends South Africa into the World Cup final, where they will face the winner of the clash between India and Australia. The grand finale takes place on Sunday, 2 November, at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, starting at 11:30 (local time).
