This month in our monthly feature of African Celebrity Appreciation we are in South Africa celebrating the award-winning actress, Thuso Mbedu. This is a young lady that has silently knocked down international doors and it’s clear she is not about to stop anytime soon.
Thuso Mbedu is a South African actress, born on the 8th July 1991 in Pietermaritzburg. She also studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. She has acted in some of the best television productions like Saints and Sinners, Isibaya, Scandal!, Snake Park, Generations The Legacy, Shuga and of course I’sThunzi which saw her get nominated for an International Emmy. She also received Best Actress nomination for the same role at the DSTV Viewers Choice Awards. She was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress at the 45th and 46th International Emmy Awards respectively. In 2018 she won the Best Actress in a TV Drama award at the 12th South African Film and Television Awards.
Getting international recognition for her work in her homeland wasn’t going to just be the end for her, she went on to score a lead role in Hollywood. Thuso Mbedu has been cast to play the role of Cora in Barry Jenkins’ Amazon series, The Underground Railroad. Yes, Thuso will lead the cast. She is indeed aiming for that Oscar. Go on Thuso!!
Thuso is a happy soul and oh so beautiful. We are crossing fingers for her to continue shinning and conquer the international stages. We are here for her and we will continue to celebrate our African celebrities. That Oscar award is on its way to the continent, we can smell it already.
