How a South African social worker turned Canadian newcomer, mother, psychologist and content creator is redefining what it means to build a life – and a community – online.
There is something immediately familiar about Boitumelo Mustapha. She feels like the friend who calls you into the conversation, pulls up a chair and says, “Okay, girl, let’s talk.” Except that conversation is happening across a screen, reaching hundreds of thousands of people.
Known online as Tumi Mustapha, the South African-born digital creator has built a growing community around beauty, wellness, lifestyle, motherhood and her much-loved “Pretty Girl Talk” series. Her content is funny, warm and conversational, but beneath the humour is something more substantial: a woman navigating identity, migration, motherhood, career and reinvention in real time.
For Tumi, the internet was never necessarily the destination. It began with a much simpler question from home.

A Girl From the North West
Born in South Africa’s North West Province, Tumi’s journey did not begin with the intention of becoming an influencer. Before the cameras, TikTok and Pretty Girl Talk, there was education and a desire to work with people.
Tumi holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from North-West University, followed by a Master’s degree in Psychology from Athabasca University in Canada. Her professional background has given her an understanding of people, behaviour, relationships and wellbeing — themes that now naturally find their way into her digital storytelling.
Her professional profile also reflects her continued interest in wellness, youth development, coaching and psychology. But her life would eventually take her far beyond the North West.
Canada.
Moving countries meant stepping into an entirely different chapter — one that would eventually become the foundation for her unexpected career as a digital creator.
“What are you getting up to?”
Sometimes the beginning of something significant is almost laughably ordinary. After relocating to Canada with her family, Tumi’s siblings would regularly ask her what she was doing and how life was going.
They wanted to see her world.Their solution?
“ Why don’t you just start posting what you’re getting up to?”
And she did. What began as a way of allowing her family back home to see her life in Canada slowly evolved into something much bigger.
Her everyday experiences became stories. Her observations became conversations. Her personality became the content.And people began watching.
Tumi wasn’t presenting an impossibly polished version of life in a new country. Instead, she invited people into the everyday: parenting, beauty, getting dressed, errands, relationships, work, womanhood, migration and all the small, funny moments that make up an ordinary life.
In doing so, she discovered something powerful: people weren’t simply interested in where she was. They were interested in how she was experiencing it.
The “Pretty Girl” philosophy
At the centre of Tumi’s digital world is Pretty Girl Talk – a concept that sounds playful but has become much more than a catchphrase.
Her version of “pretty girl” isn’t just about beauty. It’s about conversation. It’s about confidence. It’s about womanhood and figuring things out. And sometimes, it’s simply about laughing at yourself along the way.

The Psychology Behind the Personality
There is a clear link between Tumi’s academic background and the community she has built.
A degree in Social Work and a Master’s in Psychology may not be the traditional path to becoming a lifestyle creator, but in Tumi’s case, the connection is obvious. Her content is fundamentally about people – why we behave the way we do, how we navigate relationships, how motherhood changes identity and what it feels like to start again.
This isn’t academic psychology delivered as a lecture. It’s psychology translated into everyday life.
Starting Again in a New Country
Migration is central to Tumi’s story. Moving from South Africa to Canada meant more than changing an address. Like many immigrants, she had to navigate rebuilding her professional identity in a new system – an experience she has spoken about openly.

There is a tendency to underestimate beauty and lifestyle creators because the content can appear light. But influence doesn’t always announce itself as serious.
Sometimes influence looks like a woman sitting in her car talking to a camera. Sometimes it’s a beauty recommendation, a joke about motherhood or a conversation about starting over.
Sometimes it’s simply another woman watching and thinking: “Wait. Me too.”
