Statues took over the social media trending world these past few days, with Nigeria honouring Jacob Zuma and South Africa honouring Oliver Tambo.
“A statue is a carved or cast figure of a person or animal, especially one that is life-size or larger. An image or likeness (as of a person or animal) sculptured, modeled, or cast in a solid substance (as marble or bronze).”
South African President, Jacob Zuma unveiled a 2,5m statue of former African National Congress president Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo at the OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday the 19th October 2017.
The statue shows Oliver Tambo’s return to South Africa after 30 years in exile. It shows him descending from a plane. It is a master piece. An iconic art and a lot of South Africans are happy with it. The statue is erected at the International Arrivals Terminal.
The Tambo family and other cabinet Ministers were present at the unveiling of the statue. Dali Tambo, the son of Oliver Tambo expressed his appreciation and described it as a soft vengeance on the apartheid government and those who tried to airbrush him out of history. It’s reported that Dali Tambo had been trying to get a statue of his father erected at OR Tambo airport for 11years.
The statue was created by artists, Kgaogelo Mashilo, Paballo Majela, Zelda Stroud and the Sculpture Casting Services, who had been working on it since May.
A week before he unveiled Oliver Tambo’s statue, President Jacob Zuma had his own moment of glory during his 2 day trip to Nigeria.
President Jacob Zuma visited Nigeria on Friday the 13th of October. During his visit, a giant bronze statue of him was unveiled by Governor Rochas Okorocha in Nigeria’s Imo State.
Not only was South African president honoured with a N520 million statue, he also got a road named after him in Owerri city.
He was also honoured with a ceremony that conferred on him the traditional title of Ochiagha Imo, a chieftaincy title. All this has angered a lot of people.

Nigerians are not happy at all about this.
So are South Africans.

The honoring of President Zuma in Nigeria has caused an outrage in Nigeria and South Africa. Both countries are not happy and they took to social media to express it openly.
It’s reported that angry Nigerian residents were on Monday seen throwing stones and abusing their Governor Rochas Okorocha. CHINEKE!!
