Walmart has officially opened its first-ever African store at Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg, marking a major milestone for the global retail giant. The new location brings Walmart’s signature “Every Day Low Prices” model to South African shoppers, along with a bright, modern store design and a mix of local and international products.

Shoppers can expect everything from fresh foods and electronics to exclusive global brands such as Drew Barrymore’s “Beautiful” kitchen range and US favourites like Dr Pepper and Reese’s. The store has also created more than 80 new jobs and is partnering with local community organisation Africa Food for Thought to support early childhood centres in the area.

Walmart is also entering the on-demand delivery space with a 60-minute express service through its new South African app — a direct challenge to local leader Shoprite Sixty60.

With its debut in Johannesburg, Walmart signals a bold new chapter in African retail and a fresh wave of competition for South Africa’s shopping landscape.
