Taste of Inkanyezi: The Culinary Rise of Chef Mpho Chriselda Modutoane

There are brands that sell food — and then there are brands that feed people with purpose. Taste of Inkanyezi, founded by Soweto-born chef and entrepreneur Mpho Chriselda Modutoane, is one of those rare culinary ventures built on passion, compassion, and legacy. What began as a calling to feed communities has transformed into a rising food brand known for authenticity, heart, and unforgettable flavour.

Where It All Began

The story of Taste of Inkanyezi started long before the business had a name. A decade ago, Chef Mpho watched a documentary on Kenyan children who survived by eating from rubbish dumps. The sight tore through her spirit.

“I felt insignificant watching that and not being able to help,” she remembers.

That moment planted a seed — the desire to use food as a force for change.

The Leap Into Destiny

Eight years ago, Mpho left her secure corporate job because it no longer aligned with her purpose.

“I felt there was something more to my life than working for someone,” she says.

She leaned into what came naturally: cooking.

Becoming the Chef Behind the Brand

Armed with culinary qualifications and raw talent, she launched her business — now proudly known as Taste of Inkanyezi.
The name, meaning “Star”, represents light, hope, guidance, and rising from humble beginnings.

What started with small orders evolved into a respected culinary brand known for:

  • Authentic South African flavours
  • High-quality catering
  • Immersive food experiences
  • Community-based initiatives
  • Creative, heart-driven dishes

Taste of Inkanyezi has since positioned itself as a growing culinary force.

A Journey of Impact & Recognition

Her brand opened doors she never imagined — including becoming one of the faces of the DStv Delicious Festival through the DStv Good Traders Academy. Taste of Inkanyezi has placed her in kitchens, events, and spaces she once dreamed of entering.

“This journey has taken me into spaces I never imagined I would occupy.”

A Heritage That Became a Brand

Growing up in a family known across the community for cooking at every event, Chef Mpho inherited not just recipes — but a legacy. She was raised around pots, flavours, and communal food stories.

“The fire has always been there,” she says.

Taste of Inkanyezi would later become the modern expression of that legacy.

The Future of Taste of Inkanyezi

A Vision Bigger Than a Business

Taste of Inkanyezi is evolving beyond catering — it is becoming a movement. Chef Mpho’s long-term vision is to build a multi-functional food centre under the Taste of Inkanyezi brand:

  • A trading and retail food space
  • A training hub for young chefs
  • A hosting and event venue
  • A creative kitchen studio
  • A culinary storytelling and experience zone

This centre will be the heart of her mission: to feed, teach, uplift, and inspire through food.

Changing the World, One Dish at a Time

Taste of Inkanyezi is more than a food brand — it’s a purpose. A star that rose from Soweto and continues to shine across communities, events, and culinary spaces.

“I wanted to change the world. I didn’t know how — but I knew it would start with food.”

Her journey continues to unfold — and with Taste of Inkanyezi, the world is finally tasting her light.
