The bar has been constantly elevated over the years when it came to South African television productions.
This is evidently seen in ‘Spinners’ which has repeatedly been called one the best original series to be produced and released in South Africa.
Representation is one of the most important topics within the entertainment industry. The first season of ‘Spinners’ represented the realities of life within the coloured community within the Cape Flats. It was one of the first productions to do so.
The second season is set in Johannesburg but as new cast members Aphiwe Mkefe (Sayi Maseko) says the new season is ‘a cross cultural moment’ as it is a blend of different cultures. The show still showcases the love of spinning with the criminal elements of the first season.
Legendary actress Clementine Mosimane (Masithole Maseko) who is also a new cast member stated the plot of the second season is still relevant to various individuals especially the journey and stories of certain characters.
The first season introduced a crop of new actors such as Cantona James, Chelsea Thomas, Braeden Buys and also ‘Blood & Water’ actor Dillon Windvogel. They starred alongside notable names Elton Landrew, Melanie Du Bois and Brendon Daniels.
The eight episode second season takes off when Ethan (Cantona James) and his friends are now national spinning superstars. Their lives are disrupted when Ethan’s past comes back to haunt him, resulting in him turning to the Maseko crime family for protection. He also clashes with Sayi Maseko on the spinning circuit.
The Maseko Family is portrayed by new cast members Luyanda Zwane, Clementine Mosimane, Aphiwe Mkefe and Mondli Makhoba.
They are joined by actor and voice over artist Siyamthanda Bongani who will take on the role of Gatsha. He described his casting as ‘unreal’.
The new season which is directed by Jaco Bower with Benjamin Hoffman as the show runner will be released across 45 countries due to a partnership between Multichoice,StudioCanal and Canal +.
Spinners season 2 will debut on 25 October 2026 on Mzansi Magic at 21:00.
