Let’s Take A Trip Around The World!

About 20 000 runners participated in the annual Comrades Marathon which took place in South Africa yesterday morning. The 89km race was won by Bongmusa Mthembu from South Africa, with Zimbabwe’s Hatiwande Nyamande taking the number 2 spot.

Looking at the women side, America’s Camille Herron was the winner followed by Russia’s Alexandra Morozova. The Comrades Marathon is said to be the most popular race in the world.

Still on about sports news. Saturday night got soccer lovers screaming, shouting, and losing their minds during the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus. The Spanish and all the supporters celebrated when Real Madrid became the champions winning by 4 goals to 1. In Italy, more than 200 Juventas fans were injured during a stampede after a false bomb scare. Apparently someone yelled ‘Bomb’ as a joke and people panicked. I don’t understand why someone would joke like that. That’s something not to joke about no matter how happy you are. Anyway, the UEFA match took place in Wales, in the United Kingdom.

Speaking of the United Kingdom, Ariana Grande took time to visit some of her fans that are recovering after that terror attack that killed 22 people during her concert a couple of weeks ago. A lot seems to be happening in Europe lately. We are still not over what happened in Manchester and now another disaster has struck. On Saturday a van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge, and a lot of people were stabbed. Seven people died and 48 were injured. This is also believed to be a terror attack. Clearly it is far from over.

South African actress Terry Pheto who is currently in London, tweeted on Saturday night that she was struggling to find a taxi or uber to take her back home. This was after the London bridge news broke. People are now living in fear there. Imagine you are just walking and someone just runs you over or stabs you? It’s scary!

Coming back home, Kenya’s Presidential hopeful, Solomon Gichira was arrested last week for attempting suicide. He appeared in court and he was charged with attempting suicide, creating disturbance and destroying property. It’s reported that Solomon tried to jump from a sixth floor building. Apparently he was told by the IEBC that he’d not be cleared to present his papers for the August polls, meaning he won’t be able to be part of the candidates. This is what we call dedicating yourself to your job. All he wants is to lead Kenya by any means necessary. We are trying not to laugh.

Lesotho people also headed to the polls on Saturday to cast their votes this weekend. The big question was why were soldiers placed at voting stations? It is believed that some voters were intimidated. This was Lesotho’s 3rd general election since 2012.

South African President, Jacob Zuma is going through it all as usual. A Sunday newspaper reported that Mr Zuma owns a palace in Dubai that was bought for him by the well-known Gupta family. It’s said the palace cost R330-million and his neighbour is none other than Robert Mugabe. The paper also reported that Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane also bought an apartment for R18-million in the Burj Khalifa.

The presidency released a statement denying the reports by the newspaper.

The Democratic Alliance, which happens to be one of the opposition parties in South Africa, suspended former leader Helen Zille after she refused to apologise for her colonial tweets. The DA leader, Mmusi Maimane said he asked Hellen Zille to apologise to South Africans and the DA but she refused. African politics is a true roller coaster.

It was very disturbing to read an article about musician Arthur Mafokate allegedly beating up his girlfriend Cici. South Africa is in the middle of a storm to fight women abuse, so for a celebrity to go and do the exact same thing that women are fighting against at this point, is really disturbing and frustrating.

Other disturbing news – the story of the late Karabo Mokoena in the SundayWorld. Karabo is the young lady that was allegedly killed by her boyfriend and her burnt body was found in a trash dump. Now it’s been reported that she was killed as a sacrifice. South African newspaper (Sunday World) yesterday reported that, before her death, the couple swapped blood in a Johannesburg church in a bid to unite them spiritually and strengthen her boyfriend Sandile Mantsoe’s business. Apparently Sandile’s Ghanaian sangoma was also involved in the murder but he died soon after Sandile opened up to the police about the whereabouts of Karabo’s body. Another twist to the story is that Sandile is actually a married man. We are defeated!!
