Stepping into this role as the new Editor-in-Chief of Osssify Media.
There are some things in life that, no matter how far you run from them, have a way of finding you. For me, that has always been magazines.
In my Matric year, I remember saying, “I want to work in a magazine.” I didn’t really know what that meant then. I had discovered Vogue, and I was fascinated by the world of fashion, imagery, people and stories. I simply knew I wanted to be part of it. Little did I know where that desire would take me.
My journey began in 2008 as a model, eventually leading me into styling, creative direction, writing and storytelling. For years, I found myself trying to run away from this particular side of the work, only for it to keep finding its way back to me.
And now, after a year of being part of Ossify helping build its foundation, shape its identity and imagine what it could become I find myself stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief.
It is exciting. It is humbling. And, if I am honest, a little scary. But it feels like the right next chapter.
Ossify has always been about more than simply publishing stories. It is about documenting the people, ideas and places shaping contemporary Africa. It is about fashion, art, business, design, travel, music and the creative economy but, more importantly, it is about the stories behind them.
As I step into this role, I want us to continue looking beyond the headline. To find the voices worth hearing, the ideas worth exploring and the stories worth keeping.
Because culture is constantly being created around us, and someone has to document it.
Our ambition is not simply to reflect the Africa of today, but to create work that can live beyond it,to become part of the cultural archive of tomorrow.
I often think about that young person in Matric who wanted to work in a magazine without knowing exactly what that would mean. Perhaps I was never running away from it. Perhaps I was simply finding my way towards it. RAnd now, I have the privilege of helping tell the stories worth keeping.
