Forbes Africa Magazine released their May edition and they are giving us Africa’s Top 10 money makers in the music business. These artists have clearly put the African continent on the map and some have been awarded for their hard work.
The good part on their side is that, they are coining it. Their hard work has indeed paid off because they do smile all the way to the bank and will not be financially struggling anytime soon.
Let’s take a look and see who is in that Top 10 list.
Oliver Mtukudzi making Zimbabwe proud by securing the #10 spot. We are not surprised by this one because this man has been in the industry forever. He is not just a Zimbabwean icon, he is an African icon. It’s good to see that legends like him have their finances on lock.
Ghana sitting at #9, represented by non other than Sarkodie. At 28years old he has been living music and bagging awards left, right and centre.
He just added a new member to his family. He is now a father to a baby girl. This is Davido from Nigeria chilling at the #8 spot.
The young man that does big things, Wizkid is at #7. He is from Nigeria and he is only 26years old.
Mr Classic Man, the Nigerian-American, the one and only Jidenna is at #6 with his swaggy self. Jidenna is living it up in the USA and we see him on world stages spreading that music.
The only female on the list. Trendsetter, the Zimbabwean-American, the 24year old Tinashe kicking off the Top #5. You go girl, keep making that money.
Nigeria in the Top 5, represented by Don Jazzy at #4.
Another African icon is South Africa‘s Hugh Masekela. Bra Hugh as he is known, is at #3 and that is not a surprise at all. He is basically a pioneer in this music ‘game’, he owns it. In case you didn’t know, Bra Hugh is against women wearing wigs/weaves and cannot be photographed with any woman that has a wig or weave. He wants that natural hair. Hehehehe
South Africa is dominating the Top 5. At #2 , DJ Black Coffee is just chilling and not shaken. This man has traveled the world, doing what he loves and giving people their money’s worth.
Senegal are you there? Your boy Akon is right here. The Senegalese-American has owned the music industry since he got in. He might be quiet these days but he is still making that money behind the scenes. What we love about Akon, is that he still acknowledges the love his African people have for him. He always goes an extra mile to give back to the continent by helping those less fortunate. From working with the likes Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Eminem, David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, French Montana, Lil Wayne, T-Pain, it is not shocking that he is at the #1 spot. In February this year, his net worth was said to be $80 Million. WHAT!!!
Any surprises? Any expectations? We thought Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour will also be on the list. I mean his net worth was estimated to be over $120 Million. What happened here?

Nice! But it would have been nice to have a list of Africans that are purely based in Africa and not the ones based in America.
I agree with you Phetolo. It’s kinda unfair to include the American based ones. They are no longer on our watch.
Tinashe is the only female???Gal must be loaded!
Black Coffee seems to have that quiet strength about him. Makes a lot of us like him and his music.
I think it would be more interesting if the list had figures, right now it’s just a manner of us estimating how much they actually have
I thought P Square & that other guy from DRC who sings rumba were coining it??
Where are the figures? Numbers mama…numbers!
Wow! Good to see a lot of young talent here.
I must say it was hard to find your page in google.
You write great articles but you should rank your page higher in search engines.
If you don’t know how to do it search on youtube: how to rank a website

When I originally commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now
each time a comment is added I get three emails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
Appreciate it!
