Ghana: Asamoah Gyan now available for AFCON 2019!

Early last week, top Ghanaian soccer player Asamoah Gyan announced his retirement from the national soccer team (Black Stars).

Asamoah made it clear that he was unhappy with how he was being treated by the coach, who by the way chose another player to be the Captain and lead the Black Stars through AFCON 2019 which is taking place in Egypt next month.

He went and posted his retirement on social media on the 20th May.

2 days later Gyan released another statement, this time reversing his retirement after speaking to the President of Ghana, “A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded. I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the AFCON trophy.”

Phew! Thank you Mr President, we want to see good football during AFCON, Gyan being on that field is a need for most Africans.

Anyway, going back to the Captain fiasco, Asamoah Gyan has now been made ‘General Captain’ for Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad while Andre Ayew has been made team captain. What does a General Captain do? Is he higher than the Team Captain? No disrespect to Ayew at all, we love him too.

Lol, uAsamoah naye needs to get his act together and learn how to stand firm with the decisions he makes. Remember it’s not the first he’s retired and made a U-turn? I think this is the third/fourth time he has returned from retirement. Listen, I am a huge fan of Gyan but I think sometimes he is quick to act without considering important matters. I also blame his team, they are failing him by not advising him properly, because these back and fourth retirements are starting to come across like attention seeking tendencies by a baby – tantrums and all. Lol

AFCON 2019 kicks off on the 21st June with host country Egypt playing Zimbabwe. The final match is scheduled to take place on the 19th July.

Here are the groups:

We look forward to camping in our living rooms and watching our African brothers sweating it all out on Egyptian soil.
