From Johannesburg to Harare, Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar and Bamako, Africa’s creative calendar is entering a season of fashion, art and design.

SOUTH AFRICAN FASHION WEEK — THE BUSINESS OF ETHICAL FASHION
Celebrating creativity. Shaping sustainable fashion.
The African creative season begins at home with South African Fashion Week (SAFW), one of the continent’s most established platforms for designer fashion and a significant showcase of South African creativity and craftsmanship.
Founded in 1997, SAFW has spent nearly three decades building a space where fashion, business and culture intersect. Staged twice a year in Johannesburg, the platform brings together designers, buyers, media, industry professionals and fashion audiences, creating opportunities for collections to move beyond the runway and into sustainable businesses.
But SAFW is more than a fashion showcase. Its focus on developing the business of fashion is reflected through initiatives such as the New Talent Search, Scouting Menswear and the National Student Competition, which provide opportunities for emerging designers to develop their creative practices and build sustainable enterprises.

Ethical and slow fashion also remain central to the platform’s identity. SAFW champions responsible approaches to fashion, including the use of natural fibres and more considered production methods — placing sustainability alongside creativity and commercial growth.
Its influence is also deeply connected to South Africa’s cultural landscape. Designers draw from local traditions, artistry and contemporary African identity while using fashion as a way to engage with audiences beyond the country’s borders.
Through collaborations and partnerships across Africa and internationally, SAFW continues to create pathways between South African designers and the wider global fashion industry.
After almost three decades, its role extends beyond presenting collections. It remains an important part of the infrastructure supporting South African designer fashion — connecting creativity with opportunity, culture with commerce and local talent with the world.
ZIMBABWE FASHION WEEK
8–10 October 2026 | Harare, Zimbabwe

From Johannesburg, the creative conversation moves north to Harare for Zimbabwe Fashion Week, taking place from 8 to 10 October at The Venue Avondale.
Bringing together designers, creatives, industry voices and fashion lovers, the three-day event will present a series of runway evenings under this year’s theme, “SOWN: From Our Soil to the World.”

The runway becomes more than a presentation of clothing. It becomes a meeting point for heritage, craftsmanship, new ideas and a new generation of creative voices.
DESIGN WEEK LAGOS
18–25 October 2026 | Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos takes centre stage later in October with Design Week Lagos, a leading platform exploring design as a catalyst for innovation, industry and cultural exchange across Africa.
Rooted in Nigeria and spread throughout Lagos, the festival brings together architects, manufacturers and creatives to explore the ways design shapes cities, industries and everyday life.
Exhibitions, trade showcases, talks, competitions, training programmes and partner-led events transform the city into a broader design ecosystem.
The result is a week that reflects Lagos itself: energetic, ambitious and constantly evolving.
LAGOS FASHION WEEK
28 October – 01 November | Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos Fashion Week remains one of the continent’s most significant platforms connecting fashion creativity with the business of the industry.
Founded in 2011, the platform was established to showcase exceptional talent emerging from Africa. Today, its work extends beyond the traditional fashion-week model, supporting designers, strengthening businesses and creating opportunities for collaboration across the fashion value chain.
Designers, manufacturers, retailers, buyers, investors, media and policymakers converge around a vision for an African fashion industry that is innovative, globally competitive and rooted in African creativity.

At its core is the belief that fashion can operate as both cultural expression and economic infrastructure — creating opportunities for entrepreneurship, employment and international trade.
For African designers, the platform represents a space where creative expression can meet commerce and where local talent can build connections with a wider global industry.
ART X LAGOS
5–8 November 2026 | Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos’ cultural season continues into November with ART X Lagos, the international art fair founded by Tokini Peterside-Schwebig in 2016.
Created to celebrate contemporary culture from Africa and its diaspora, ART X Lagos has developed into a major platform connecting artists, galleries, collectors and audiences from across the world.
Its identity extends beyond the conventional art fair. Music, film, design, literature and visual art intersect throughout its multidisciplinary programme.
ART X Live!, ART X Cinema and ART X Talks expand the conversation, while initiatives such as the ART X Prize and The Development Forum support emerging artists and curators.
The 2026 edition takes place from 5 to 8 November, continuing Lagos’ growing reputation as a meeting point for contemporary African culture.
DAKAR FASHION WEEK
December 2026 | Dakar, Senegal

In December, the creative spotlight moves west to Senegal for Dakar Fashion Week.
Founded by Adama Amanda Ndiaye in 2001, the platform has become one of Africa’s longstanding fashion weeks, showcasing designers from Senegal and across the continent.
The 2026 edition marks its 25th anniversary, with a programme expected to include a retrospective of Ndiaye’s work alongside runway appearances from designers connected to the history of the platform.
The anniversary comes at a time when African fashion continues to engage with questions of professionalisation, internationalisation, environmental responsibility and the development of new creative narratives.
Exact dates and venues for the 2026 edition were still to be announced in the most recent coverage.
RENCONTRES DE BAMAKO
26 November 2026 – 26 January 2027 | Bamako, Mali

Bringing the creative year towards a close is the Rencontres de Bamako, the African Biennale of Photography.
Since 1994, the Bamako Encounters have brought together photographers, artists, curators and professionals working across photography and contemporary image-making.
The 15th edition, titled “REFABULATION(S),” will feature 49 selected artists, alongside special projects, from 26 November 2026 through to 26 January 2027.
Led by General Delegate El Hadj Amadou Diop, with Armelle Dakouo as General Curator, the biennale continues Bamako’s position as an important meeting point for photography, contemporary art and visual storytelling.
A CONTINENT IN CREATIVE MOTION
Taken together, these events reveal the scale and diversity of Africa’s contemporary creative landscape.
From the business of ethical fashion in Johannesburg to Zimbabwean craftsmanship, Lagos’ design and fashion ecosystems, Nairobi’s art market, Dakar’s fashion heritage and Bamako’s photographic practices, the continent’s creative industries are building platforms that connect culture, commerce and international audiences.
The season ahead is not simply a series of events. It is a reflection of a continent creating its own spaces, shaping its own conversations and giving its creative communities room to define what comes next.
Africa is creating. The season is underway.
