When you think of the most popular streaming platforms, it is easy to assume that Netflix would dominate the conversation. But African streaming platform Showmax has carved a niche of its own and proven that it can give Netflix a run for its money.

The streaming platform, which is available across 44 African countries, has made it its mission to do what other streaming platforms haven’t done in the past—and that is to tell African stories.
Showmax, with its relationship with MultiChoice, has provided an avenue where fans can catch up on their favourite DStv shows.

Showmax has also prided itself on producing its own series and reality shows. These include Adulting, Youngins, The Real Housewives of Durban, among many others, which have gone on to build cult followings across the continent.
The platform has also brought successful African versions of The Real Housewives franchise, which have become hits in South Africa and across the African continent.

Its partnership with the Joburg Film Festival, which was born in 2023 and came to fruition this year, saw the streaming of a variety of films produced by filmmakers from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. This further cemented Showmax’s celebration of African filmmakers.
We hope that other streaming platforms take note of the strides Showmax has made in telling African stories—and hopefully, they will follow suit.
