Last week, we hit the road all the way to Maputo, Mozambique in a Ford Ranger all thanks to Ford South Africa. It was a long drive but we didn’t even feel it. I will tell you about the trip itself in a separate post. For now let me explain why I am in love with this Ranger.
I first drove the Ranger a few weeks ago when we attended the #FordWildLife event in Pretoria. If you missed it, read about HERE. Anyway, I fell in love with the car from that day, so I was looking forward to the Maputo trip just so I could drive that machine again. Trust me, issa machine!
The Ranger will make you wanna drive nje to the middle of nowhere just to say you did it. We were using the Double Cab Automatic high-spec XLT model (4×4). The Ranger 2.2 TDCi Auto models are available across all three body styles, including Single Cab, Super Cab and Double Cab. You can also select between three different specification levels: XL, mid-range XLS and high-spec XLT.
It’s Efficient and Economical. Ford’s latest-generation 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCi engine delivers the ideal balance of fuel efficiency and performance. It is equipped with a variable nozzle turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation and high-pressure common rail diesel injection to deliver 118kW of power.
With a peak torque output of 385Nm on tap, the Ranger 2.2 TDCi delivers outstanding driveability in all conditions – whether overtaking, carrying a load, towing or conquering challenging off-road terrain.
It also features several noise and vibration-reduction features employed in the design, making the 2.2 TDCi one of the smoothest-running engines in its class.
Mated to the six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, the torque is delivered seamlessly to the drive wheels to provide an exceptionally smooth and refined driving experience. Drivers have the option of allowing the gearbox to do the shifting on its own in fully Automatic mode, switching to ‘Sport’ mode for improved responsiveness and downshifts, or selecting manual gearshifts for ultimate control.
Service intervals of 20Â 000km are standard across the board, while a five-year/100 000km service plan is included in the purchase price on XL, XLS XLT and Wildtrak models (optional on the entry level offerings). This ensures low running costs and superb value for money.
Outstanding value for money is the hallmark of the Ranger 2.2 TDCi XL Double Cab Auto, which is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 variants. The XLS 4×4 takes the features list up several notches, with the luxuriously appointed XLT Double Cab 4×2 rounding off the new Ranger 2.2 TDCi Auto line-up.
